A false view of humility may belittle, or have us looking down on ourselves. I love this quote from C.S. Lewis that clears it up: “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less.” -C.S. Lewis In humility, we actually go up higher in thought: "In humility they climb the heights of holiness."
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 514:8) "And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted."
(Matthew 23:12) Because letting go of glorifying a 'self' apart from or separated from God, allows us to go up higher in thought, to glorify God alone. This actually lifts our confidence, rather than diminishing it. "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."
(James 4:10)
This is a quality we can never have too much of. Mary Baker Eddy reminds us of this...
"...we cannot be too grateful nor too humble..."
(In part, from The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 134:5–8) And the Bible demands it, and calls us to be who we truly are: "...be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble."
